This Friday, Dec. 13th marks the 10th Anniversary of Elkton’s Cookie Throwdown Competition… That’s 10 years of Elkton’s Deliciousness! Are you familiar with the Cookie Throwdown? Have you attended past competitions and cast your vote for the tastiest cookie? We know sampling 10 cookies (a couple years there were as many as 14!) is a lot to ask but trust us, take small bites, wash it down with a swig of milk and you’ll be a connoisseur in no time!
This Years Competitors Include:
- Brookbend
- Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)
- Cecil Land Trust
- Cecil County Arts Council
- Cecil Land Trust
- Elk River Brewery
- Millstone Jewelers
- Spork
- The Palette & The Page
- Suz’ Quilt Studio
So here’s a thought… Have you ever wondered how the Cookie Throwdown got its start? See if you can guess how the competition came into existence:
- Santa had enough with the sad, stale cookies left for him on Christmas Eve and requested Elkton hold a contest to find a better cookie.
- There was a huge sale on flour, eggs, sugar and butter at the local Acme during the 2009 holiday season.
- A group of women got together and haggled over who made the best cookies.
- The competition began in honor of Elkton’s Historical Figure ‘Cookie Malone’ who made her living as a local lounge singer.
2018 Cookie Throwdown Submission
If you guessed #3 you’re correct!
In fact, the story goes like this:
Early December 2009, The Palette and the Page had just opened it’s doors a few weeks before and the artists in house were planning the FIRST, First Friday in Elkton (First Friday’s also got their start at The Palette & The Page). While all the artists were present it was decided a refreshment was in order for the upcoming ‘First Friday Event’…. Because you know, nothing makes an event more widely attended than offering FOOD! Everyone agreed refreshments were a grand idea! Then one of the women piped up, “I’ll make cookies!… I make the BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies!” Then one of the other women replied, “Not true, I make the BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies!” Which then became a playful cacophony of ladies disagreeing with one another over whose chocolate chip cookies were the tastiest. Then a light bulb went on… “I know, let’s have a Cookie Throwdown just like that guy Bobby Flay on the Food Network and we’ll let the customers decide!” Thus Elkton’s Cookie Throwdown Competition was born!
So this Friday as you sample the variety of delicious cookies offered by Elkton’s participating merchants and cast your vote, give a nod to those ladies who 10 years ago haggled over who makes the BEST Cookies! Note: The first Throwdown featured only Chocolate Chip Cookies which was nice but variety is the spice of life, don’t you agree? Although 2017’s Chocolate Chip Crabmeat Cookie with Old Bay Seasoning seemed a tad too far outside the norm and yet somehow managed to garner 2nd place.
Looking forward to seeing you downtown this Friday!
Many Thanks to the 1st Annual Cookie Competitors, there’d be no Throwdown without you trailblazers:
Margie Blystone, Gabrielle Oldham, Patti Paulus, Diane Price, Jessica Price and Janet Youse.
*Editors Note: The powers that be informed the author that in fact, LAST year the 10th Annual Cookie Throwdown was celebrated though this is the 10th Anniversary of the event.
